The fog bank on its way in from the open ocean in mid afternoon
Our first anchorage in Alaska and what a keeper. It is just beautiful but no bears yetWe finally left Prince Rupert after three glorious days of weather which according to many we spoke to was as hot as it ever gets in Prince Rupert, approximately 30 degrees. To our continued good fortune the weather conditions in Dixon Entrance, an open ocean crossing appear to be holding.
We left port at 6:00 AM much to Nance's delight at the early hour to take advantage of the lighter morning winds. We were worried about fog which was forecast for this morning but it never materialized. We left Prince Rupert via the narrow and shallow rock scattered Venn Passage and were proceeding cautiously when the entire sport fishing fleet in Prince Rupert passed our boat at just a notch or two under full speed. All boaters in PR have two speeds only, stopped and flat out.
We navigated this difficult passage successfully and pointed our bow for Alaska. We crossed the Canada US border just as Nance was mastering her newest self taught piece on her new recorder, "Good King Wenceslas". After many high fives, we continued on to our destination of the day, Foggy Bay.
We had to pay close attention entering the anchorage in Foggy Bay as there are reputed to be several unmarked rocks which have tripped up other boaters. Never a good sign. We made it alright and by noon were anchored in a beautiful and peaceful bay. Nance caught up on some some sleep while I grabbed my fishing stuff and went off in search of the mighty Alaska salmon. Alas, I failed to find a dumb one and we had to BBQ the fresh fillet of sockeye I had the foresight to buy from the docks in Prince Rupert. One other boat, a Grand Banks entered the anchorage later in the afternoon, what a traffic jamb, we are not used to such crowding.
At around 4:00 the fog came rolling in and established why they call this bay Foggy Bay. It lifted around 9:00 however and the bright daylight lasted until after 11:00. Each night now we go the bed with daylight outside the windows. Amazing but that's just how it is in Alaska.
