July 5 - Wrangell, Wrangell Island

Wrangell main harbour, a real old time fishing town

I wonder how many Canadian yards looked like this on Canada Day?

We arrived in a brand new marina Heritage Harbour built behind breakwaters just on the outside coast of Wrangell Island south of the main town harbour. It is primarily a fish boat marina with processing facilities at the dock for unloading fish from the boat holds. It is neat being right in the Alaska working harbours.
We are docked right next to a couple from Oregon who brought their boat all the way up from San Diego where they bought it. Nance was not really signing on for the idea but it was interesting talking to them.
Wrangell is an interesting town. It is clearly blue collar Alaska with no pretense at going after the tourist market but the people are really friendly and we enjoyed our stay here so much. Nance and I were carrying a big block of ice back from the town to the marina about a half hour walk and a pickup truck stopped to ask where we were going and offered a ride to the marina. Turned out the driver was the mayor and he just wanted to make sure we got to the boat before our ice melted. A really nice guy.
There are no restaurants in Wrangell so we BBQ'd on the boat and began making calls to see if we could line up a tour to the famous bear sanctuary in Annan Bay at the south end of Wrangell Island. We didn't stop there in Bojangles on the way up because we did not have a Forest Service permit to enter the grounds and we also heard that anchoring in the bay was really tentative as in keep someone on board as an anchor watch.
